We are Alike, a Charitable Incorporated Organisation registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales (charity number 1181848), with our registered office at Soho Works, 180 The Strand, London, WC2R 1EA. We license you to use the Alike mobile application (the "app") and any updates or supplements to it, in accordance with these Terms of Use (the "Terms").
Alike is a peer support community, not a medical or emergency service. We do not provide medical advice. You must seek the advice of your doctor or other qualified healthcare professionals regarding any health-related questions or treatment decisions. You should not alter your medication or treatment plan based on information received through the app, including from other users. In a medical emergency, always dial 999 or contact NHS 111. Alike cannot guarantee immediate responses to messages or reports. Any information on the app is for general information only and must not be relied upon for medical advice or treatment. Our safeguarding procedures are outlined in our Safeguarding Policy.
We handle your information in line with our Privacy Notice, which explains what personal and health-related data we collect, how we process this information under the lawful bases of explicit consent and legitimate interests, in compliance with UK GDPR, and your rights to access, correct, delete, or withdraw consent for your data. We may collect limited technical and analytics data, such as device type, crash logs, and performance metrics, to improve app functionality.
We only collect special category data, for example health information such as diagnosis tags, where you choose to provide it, enabling peer connection. Internet transmissions are never completely secure, and messages or posts shared within the app may be visible to others depending on your settings. You can delete your account at any time within app settings. Some anonymised data may be retained for legal, safety, or reporting purposes.
You agree to provide accurate information when creating and updating your account, keep your password confidential, and not share your account with anyone else. You must use your real name and authentic photos. You are responsible for all activity under your account.
While any personal information you provide will be handled in line with our Privacy Notice, please be aware that some information is visible to other users through your public profile and within other app features. Furthermore, information shared in posts, group discussions, or direct messages cannot be guaranteed to remain confidential and may be seen or shared by others.
Any content you share, including posts, messages, or photos, must follow our Community Promise and Content Standards. By uploading or sharing content, you give Alike a royalty-free, worldwide licence to use, store, and display it to operate the app and fulfil our charitable purpose. This licence ends when you delete your account or the content is removed.
If you want to learn more about the app, have any problems using it, or if you wish to contact us for any other reason, including to leave a complaint, please contact us at help@alike.org.uk. You can find out more about this in our Complaints Policy.
If we have to contact you, we will do so by email using the contact details you have provided to us.
For notifications relating to Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation (CSAE) or other safety concerns, please contact our designated safeguarding officer at safety@alike.org.uk. This contact is authorised to receive and respond to potential notifications from Google Play or law enforcement authorities and to take appropriate enforcement and reporting actions.
In return for your agreeing to comply with these Terms, you may download a copy of the app onto your device and view, use, and display it for your personal purposes only. You may receive and use any free supplementary software code or updates of the app incorporating patches and corrections of errors that we may provide to you. You may not rent, sell, sublicense, or share the app with others, copy, adapt, reverse-engineer, or modify the app except as required for normal use, or use the app in any way that breaches UK law or infringes the rights of others. If you download the app to a device not owned by you, you must have the owner's permission and will remain responsible for complying with these Terms.
You can choose to share your location by selecting "Allow location access." This helps you find connections near you. You can remove or update your location at any time in your app settings. For details about how we collect, use, and protect personal information (including location data), please read our Privacy Notice or contact our Data Privacy Manager at privacy@alike.org.uk.
You may use the app only for lawful purposes. You must not use the app in any way that breaches applicable law, causes harm, or transmits harmful content. You must not harm, bully, intimidate, or harass anyone, upload content that is illegal, discriminatory, explicit, or otherwise harmful, promote violence, misinformation, or unverified medical claims, impersonate others or misrepresent your identity, or send spam, malicious code, or unauthorised advertising.
Contributions must be accurate, if factual, and genuinely held, if opinion-based, and must comply with UK law. They must not defame, harass, or abuse others, include sexually explicit, violent, or discriminatory material, infringe intellectual property rights, mislead, impersonate, or breach confidentiality.
The app is monitored but not pre-moderated. This means moderators review reported or flagged content and may remove it if it breaches our Community Promise or poses a safeguarding risk. Alike does not review every post before publication.
We act proportionately to maintain safety but cannot guarantee all harmful content will be prevented or detected. We are not liable for user behaviour.
If you breach these standards, Alike may remove your content, suspend or delete your account, or notify relevant authorities if required by law.
Child Safety and Exploitation Policy
Although Alike is an 18+ community, we are committed to upholding international child safety standards and to preventing the use of our platform for any exploitative or illegal purpose.
Alike strictly prohibits any content, behaviour, or activity that involves or promotes Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation (CSAE). This includes any attempt to share, request, create, or distribute material depicting or referring to CSAE, or to use the platform to engage with minors for exploitative purposes.
Users who violate this policy will have their accounts immediately suspended or terminated, and Alike will report such activity to relevant authorities as required by law.
Alike operates in accordance with the UK Online Safety Act 2023 and related guidance from Ofcom on online child protection.
When we consider that a breach of our acceptable use policy has occurred, we may take any action we deem appropriate.
Failure to comply constitutes a material breach of the Terms and may result in the temporary or permanent withdrawal of your right to use the app, removal of content, issue of warnings, legal proceedings for reimbursement of costs, or disclosure of information to law enforcement authorities as required by law.
If we become aware of any content or behaviour involving Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), we will immediately remove the material, suspend or delete the associated accounts, and report the incident to law enforcement or other appropriate authorities, including the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) or the UK Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), as required by law.
You can report concerning content or behaviour using the in-app “Report” feature or by contacting us at safety@alike.org.uk.
If you wish to make a formal complaint, please email help@alike.org.uk, and our team will ensure it’s passed to the right person in line with our Complaints Policy.
If someone is at immediate risk, contact emergency services on 999 before notifying us.
Alike acts proportionately to maintain a safe community but cannot guarantee user behaviour or outcomes. The app is provided "as is." We do not guarantee that it will always be error-free or uninterrupted. Alike is for personal, non-commercial use only.
We are not responsible for any business losses or content on external websites linked within the app. Nothing in these Terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or any liability that cannot legally be excluded.
We may update these Terms to reflect legal changes, best practice, or app improvements. You will be notified of any material updates and asked to re-accept them when necessary.
You may stop using Alike at any time. We may suspend or terminate your account if you breach these Terms or the Community Promise, or engage in behaviour that risks others' safety. Upon termination, you must delete the app from your devices. We may remotely disable access if necessary.
All intellectual property rights in the app belong to Alike or its licensors.
You are granted a personal, non-transferable licence to use the app solely for lawful purposes in line with these Terms.
These Terms are governed by English law. You must bring any legal proceedings related to the app in the courts of England and Wales.
All users must agree to and uphold Alike's Community Promise, which sets out how we care for and respect each other.
Breaking this promise may also mean breaking these Terms and could result in loss of access to the app.
Read the full Promise in the app or at alike.org.uk/communitypromise.
